Dental veneers were first used in Hollywood film sets in the 30s-60s and were more like false nails that would attach over the teeth and might only last until the end of the film shoot as they were held on only by a weak glue.
At Staplehurst Dental Practice in Kent, veneers are made of much tougher stuff! Today’s veneers are made from porcelain, which is light and thin but also strong and durable. They can be made to match the exact colour and shade of your other teeth and so can be used to cover up a range of dental imperfections and discolourations.
Where dental veneers really come into their own is providing an effective solution to chipped or damaged teeth which are not compromised enough to warrant a dental implant, but however have a negative effect on the cosmetic appearance of the mouth.
Modern dental veneers can be attached directly to the front of the tooth, but only after a small layer of the original tooth has been taken away. This serves the purpose of creating an abrasive surface to which your dentist will bind your new tailor-made veneer with a strong bonding agent to make sure that it stays n place.
Dental veneers can also be used in some cases to correct misaligned teeth, if the alignment is only slightly out, the veneer can be built up onto the tooth on an angle to match the angle of the tooth, with the front of the veneer on display at the correct angle and the tooth in its original misaligned place behind it.
In Kent, veneers are placed by our highly skilled cosmetic dentistry team. Alongside veneers patients can also opt for a range of other cosmetic treatments such as whitening, white fillings, and braces such as the ever popular Invisalign clear aligner system. In some cases many treatments can be added together to offer patients a smile makeover to transform their smile.
