Dental implants are one of the most exciting developments in the modern dental world. At Staplehurst Dental Practice in Kent we have successfully treated many patients with the help of implants, restoring not just their smile but also full functionality in their jaw, enabling them to eat whatever they choose.
When you come into our Kent practice for a consultation with an implant dentist, they will first examine you to ensure you have enough bone density to support implants, and will then begin treatment planning.
The placement of implants is meticulously planned prior to surgery, ensuring that your implants are put in prime position to support your new teeth, whilst also avoiding nerves and other vital structures. Your dentist will use scans and x-rays as necessary to assist with treatment planning and placement.
Commonly, the placement of dental implants at our Kent clinic comprises three stages. The exception to this rule is for patients who are suitable for All-on-4 implants to replace an entire arch (jaw) of teeth; in these circumstances all three stages take place at the same time.
The first stage sees your dentist placing the required number of implants in your jaw bone. Usually patients only need local anaesthetic for this procedure. Your gum is then left to heal over the implant.
Stage two involves exposing the implant after healing is complete and affixing an attachment called an abutment. This enables your dentist to securely fasten your new teeth to your implant.
The third and final stage takes place after your gum has healed around the abutment, and involves attaching your new teeth. Once they are attached to the abutment, your new teeth will both look and function in the same way as natural teeth.
